Board Games Like Settlers of Catan

Settlers of Catan is one of my favorite board games of all time. I remember playing countless hours of this with my college roommates around 2010.

If you’re like me, then you want to play more great games like it! So here’s a quick list of similar games but first lets talk about what type of board game Catan is anyways…

What Type of Board Game is Settlers of Catan?

Settlers of Catan (now officially just called Catan) is best described as a Eurogame — also known as a German-style board game.

Here’s a more complete breakdown of its game type and mechanics:

Type of Board Game: Eurogame (German-style Strategy Game)

Eurogames emphasize strategy, resource management, and indirect player interaction over luck or conflict. Catan helped popularize this entire genre worldwide.

Core Mechanics in Settlers of Catan

  • Resource Management: Players collect brick, wood, sheep, wheat, and ore based on dice rolls and use them to build roads, settlements, and cities.

  • Trading: One of the game’s standout features — players negotiate and trade resources with each other.

  • Modular Board: The island of Catan is made up of hex tiles that change layout each game, adding replayability.

  • Network Building: Expanding your road and settlement network to control more resource-producing tiles.

  • Dice Rolling: Adds an element of chance to resource production each turn.

Genre Classification Summary

  • Primary Genre: Eurogame

  • Sub-genres: Trading, Resource Management, Network Building

  • Complexity Level: Gateway / Medium-light Strategy

  • Player Count: 3–4 (best with 4)

  • Play Time: ~60–90 minutes

Now that we know a bit about Catan, let’s look at some games that you might like to play if you enjoy Catan.

  1. Carcassonne – A tile-laying Eurogame where players build cities and roads to score points. Easy to learn and great for fans of Catan’s accessible strategy.

  2. Ticket to Ride – Players collect train cards and build railway routes. It focuses on network building and set collection rather than trading, but scratches the same strategic itch.

  3. Stone Age – A worker-placement Eurogame about gathering resources, expanding your tribe, and developing civilization — like a deeper version of Catan’s resource system.

  4. Concordia – Trade and expand your Roman empire around the Mediterranean. Elegant resource management and minimal luck make it a Euro classic.

  5. Power Grid – Compete to build power networks and manage fluctuating resource markets. Highly strategic and economic, much like Catan but with auction mechanics.

  6. Puerto Rico – Players develop plantations and ship goods for points. Strong economic engine-building and indirect competition — a hallmark of Eurogames.

  7. Lords of Waterdeep – A Dungeons & Dragons–themed Eurogame where players use resources (adventurers) to complete quests. Worker placement and secret goals keep it engaging.

  8. Agricola – Build and expand a farm while managing food, animals, and crops. Deeply strategic and resource-focused, similar in spirit to Catan’s planning and production.

  9. Terra Mystica – Players expand their fantasy civilizations on a shared map, managing terrain, buildings, and resources. Heavy Euro with deep network-building mechanics.

  10. Terraforming Mars – Build corporations and manage resources to make Mars habitable. It’s essentially Catan in space, with engine-building and complex resource chains.
