So you’ve built a playable prototype, tested it a few times, and refined your rules. Your game is working… mostly.
But before we call it done, let’s take a step back together and run through a design checklist—10 important questions that can help you spot issues, polish gameplay, and get your game ready for the next stage. Whether that’s pitching to publishers, self-publishing, or just showing off at game night.
These questions aren’t meant to be overwhelming—they’re here to catch blind spots, tighten the experience, and make sure your game is the best it can be.
1. Does my board game deliver on its core experience?
Let’s go back to the very first concept. What kind of experience did you set out to create—tense bluffing? rewarding engine-building? light-hearted party fun?
Play a round and ask yourself: Does it feel like that? If the answer is no, that’s our clue to revisit either the mechanics or the theme.
Looking for inspiration to clarify your vision? Check out:
2. Is the game’s main mechanic supporting the theme—or clashing with it?
Mechanics and theme don’t have to match perfectly, but they should support each other. If you’ve got a game about diplomacy and trust but the core mechanic is “take that,” it may create friction.
3. Do the rules make sense to a first-time player?
Try handing your game (and rulebook) to someone who has never played it before. Can they get started on their own, or do they need you to step in?
Watch for hesitation, confusion, or “wait… what does this do again?”
These great gateway games do an amazing job at keeping their rules easy.
4. Are there any dominant strategies?
This is one of the easiest things to overlook—especially if you never abuse a broken combo. If players can find one strategy that wins every time, replayability disappears.
Try switching roles or player counts to test balance.
5. Is the pacing consistent—and satisfying?
Some games start strong but stall mid-game. Others feel like they end just as they’re getting good.
We want a game arc with tension, build-up, and a satisfying finish. If your players are checking the clock or dragging the endgame out, it might be time to trim or adjust.
6. Does the game offer meaningful decisions?
Do players feel like their choices matter? Are they choosing between good and great, or just reacting?
Adding just a bit more depth to the decisions (without making them overwhelming) can make a huge difference.
7. Is player downtime reasonable?
How long are players waiting between turns? Are they engaged even when it’s not their move?
This is especially important in 4+ player games. If downtime becomes an issue, consider simultaneous actions or trimming decision points.
8. Can the game be taught easily?
The best games are the ones people want to teach their friends. If explaining your game feels like reading tax code, we’ve got some work to do.
Consider this: Could your game be explained in under 10 minutes?
If you’re still early in development, keep things simple. Here’s a helpful companion post:
9. Does it scale well across player counts?
If your game says 2–5 players, it should feel fun and balanced at both ends. Play it at every listed count and see if any versions drag, break, or lose engagement.
Some games need special rules or modes for different counts. That’s okay—as long as it’s intentional.
10. Is the fun easy to access?
Here’s the final test: Does the game bring out what’s fun, early and often?
If players have to dig through 45 minutes of rules and setup before something exciting happens, they might not come back. Front-load the fun. Put something juicy in the first round.

Final Thoughts: Polish Is a Process
Finalizing a board game doesn’t mean making it perfect—it means making it solid, intentional, and ready for its next step.
Keep these questions handy as you wrap up your design. The more clarity you have now, the better your pitch, print, or play experience will be.
And remember: small tweaks can lead to big improvements.
